Frequently Asked Questions

You can find answers to our most common questions below.  It is a knowledge base to help you understand how ISBNs are used and function.

ISBN stands for “International Standard Book Number”. It is a unique identifier for books, eBooks, tapes, and CD’s. The ISBN numbering system is used worldwide and publishers around the globe identify their work in this standardized format. Each title or edition must be identified by a unique ISBN.  In essence, the ISBN number for books  is similar to a license plate which guarantees that each book type product is identified uniquely.

Publishers and self-publishers need to buy an ISBN in order to sell books to booksellers and libraries, including Amazon.com.

Each format of a title requires its own unique ISBN number. For instance, a book available in both paperback and eBook formats will need separate ISBNs for each. Booksellers use these unique ISBNs to differentiate between the formats, track sales, and reorder replacements as needed.
